We are now accepting applications for the 2019-2021 program year! 

The deadline for applications is April 30th, 2019 at 4:00pm.

FirstVoices grants will fund communities to:
  • collaborate on B.C. First Nations language archives;
  • fund the development of new archives; and
  • fund updates to existing archives.

The purpose of these grants is to increase the number of communities represented in FirstVoices archives and support existing users to include more words, phrases, songs and stories. 

Funding Amounts: Funding requests are up to $50,000 for 1 year and $100,000 for 2 years.

YEAR 1 – July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020
YEAR 2 – July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021

Deadline: April 30th, 2019, 4:00pm
Eligible applications will be subject to a peer review process to determine the successful applicants. Projects that are funded in the 2019-2020 grant cycle MUST be completed and reported on by July 1, 2020.

Overview of FirstVoices

FirstVoices is our internationally recognized online Indigenous language archiving and teaching resource that allows indigenous communities to document their language for future generations. 

FirstVoices provides state-of-the-art technologies, training and technical support to community language champions.

Teams of fluent Elders and technically savvy youth upload dictionaries, alphabets, songs, stories, words and phrases as well as audio and video to their community archives.

FirstVoices projects include:

FirstVoices Kids  – a set of interactive online games providing pre-readers with access to the language resources at 

FirstVoices Dictionary Apps– interactive dictionary/phrase apps in B.C.’s First Nations languages for the iPod, iPad and iPhone. (Twelve are now available with five more on the way). The apps contain text, audio, image and video content and are available as free downloads from the iTunes store.

FirstVoices Keyboards– contains keyboard software for over 100 languages, and includes every First Nations language in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, plus many languages in the USA.
