Aboriginal Languages Initiative (ALI) 2010-2011
The Aboriginal Languages Initiative (ALI) is a federal program funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The ALI provides funding support for community and regionally-based projects directed at maintaining, revitalizing and promoting First Nations languages. ALI funds are distributed to provincial and territorial delivery organizations.

The First Peoples' Cultural Foundation, will now be distributing ALI funding, but the First Peoples' Heritage, Language and Culture Council will help the Foundation administer the funding.

ALI objectives include:

  • To improve First Nations language preservation, protection and teaching projects in Aboriginal communities.
  • To increase the number of communities and individuals involved in the intergenerational transmission of First Nations language activities.
  • To support the development of long-term community strategies for the revitalization and maintenance of First Nations languages.
  • To help revitalize and maintain First Nations languages for future generations by increasing the number of First Nations speakers, expanding the domains in which First Nations languages are spoken, and increasing intergenerational transmission.
